I am not in favor of the Headlee Override and let me tell you why.
Before we even think about increasing taxes, we have to know that every possible way to cut costs and bring other sources of revenue into the city have been evaluated, or at least given the time of day. On top of that, the current administration has not proven themselves worthy of handling money.
When it comes to the Studio Complex, I would love to see something like alternative energy, a program which Governor Snyder's Economic Development Team is trying to bring into the state, find a home. Also, in a recent USA Today article, the list of manufacturing companies leaving China and coming back to the US is growing. While I was reading the article, I thought about how great a place like Allen Park would be for many of these companies.
Although I am a fan of the Hill, I am not in support of the entire property becoming a retail hotspot. I would like to see businesses come in, but there has to be a line drawn. While retail stores would bring people into the city to visit, what will bring people into the city to live. Someone getting an 8 dollar an hour job at a Costco is not going to help them move into the city, and on top of developing the property, we need to develop the community.
I am very open to many ideas, including Senior Citizen Apartments or possibly even an expo center. Conventions, corporate events or even concerts and guest speakers.
Now to answer your other question, I would hope that the same level of respect would be given to me as anyone else. My age is not something that should get in the way of my work as a councilman. The City Council should represent the community, and there are young people in this community who care and do not want to see this city collapse. The response I give to many people when they bring up my age is "was there a 20 year-old up there when any of this happened in the first place?"
Thank you for your response, and I hope I answered your questions fully. Anymore, ask away!
Have a great day!
Joshua LaPeer
